Community Counts: Making Meaningful Connections in Online School
One of the most common questions families ask before enrolling in a virtual school: “How do students make friends online?” It’s a fair question! After all, connection is at the heart of every great learning experience.
We’ve learned that community doesn’t depend on classroom walls, but creativity and communication. From virtual clubs to schoolwide events, students here discover that online learning offers new and exciting ways to connect.
Let’s take a look at how our students will build friendships, collaborate, and find belonging in the Lake Stellar community.
Classrooms that Bring Everyone Together
Even though our classrooms exist online, they’ll be filled with energy and interaction so students don’t just log in to listen, they participate!
Our teachers use live video lessons, breakout rooms, polls, and chats to help students share their thoughts and work together on projects. These sessions will often feel like traditional classroom discussions — just without the commute.
Students can:
Work in small groups to solve challenges.
Present their ideas to the class.
Participate in fun icebreakers that make learning feel social and lively.
Collaboration is a cornerstone of connection in our online classrooms. Teachers design activities that encourage teamwork and communication across grades and interests. And because everyone has a voice — whether they’re speaking out loud or typing in chat — even the quieter students will find ways to shine.
For instance, group projects will use digital tools like shared slides or whiteboards. There, students can brainstorm ideas, assign roles, and build presentations together just like they would in person.
Younger students might create a class storybook together, while older students tackle real-world problems through project-based learning. Along the way, they practice communication, problem-solving, and respect — all while forming authentic bonds.
Where Friendships Flourish
One of the best ways students can connect in our virtual school is through clubs and interest groups. As part of the Stellar constellation, our clubs cross state boundaries to unite students from a variety of Stellar schools. Even more opportunities for students to develop friendships!
Clubs meet through video calls or online discussion boards, where students share, collaborate, and celebrate each other’s accomplishments. These spaces are guided by faculty but fueled by creativity and shared passion. Here are just a few examples:
K-5 Pokemon Club
6-12 Anime Club
5-12 Dance Club
6-12 Theater Club
6-12 Journalism Club
3-5 Book Club
6-12 Book Club
K-5 Movie Club
6-12 Movie Club
Clubs not only help students find friends with similar interests but also build leadership and communication skills in a supportive environment.
Schoolwide Events that Build Spirit
Just because we’re a virtual school doesn’t mean we’ll skip out on school spirit! Throughout the year, we plan to host online events that bring students, teachers, and families together.
Spirit Weeks, where students dress up according to themed days and share their photos on our school community board.
Virtual Pep Rallies! These are filled with games, trivia, and student shout-outs.
Seasonal Celebrations, from fall festivals to spring showcases, students can share projects and performances.
These events, bringing together all the distant stars that are our students, will unite us as a school and remind us that there is a community behind every student.
Personalized Support
Every student deserves to feel supported both academically and personally. That’s why we provide dedicated access to online counselors and one-on-one teacher connections designed to help each learner succeed.
Our school counselors will be available to meet with students virtually for everything from goal setting and course planning to emotional support and career guidance. Whether a student needs help managing stress, preparing for college, or balancing their schedule, our counselors are just a message away.
In addition, teachers regularly schedule individual check-ins with students. These one-on-one sessions give students a chance to ask questions, review progress, and receive personalized feedback in a comfortable, private setting. It’s a space where students can build real relationships with their teachers — the kind that helps them stay motivated and engaged.
Through these personal connections, every learner has the opportunity to feel seen, heard, and supported, both academically and emotionally.
Safe and Supportive Online Spaces
Creating opportunities for connection is important — but creating safe spaces for connection is essential. Our school uses secure platforms that allow students to interact under teacher supervision. We’ll teach students about digital citizenship, helping them use technology responsibly and respectfully.
Through guidance and clear expectations, our virtual classrooms become spaces where students feel comfortable expressing themselves, taking risks, and forming genuine friendships.
Building A Community
At first, families might worry that a virtual school could feel isolating — but once students dive in, they’ll quickly find the opposite. Lake Stellar students will be surrounded by peers, teachers, and mentors who care deeply about their success. Whether through shared interests, collaborative learning, or acts of kindness, our virtual school community will show that friendship and belonging can thrive anywhere.
